  17. GENERAL NOTES
  18.  
  19. DR DOS 6.0 and OS/2 are compatible and will work well together. It
  20. is the full features of DR DOS 6.0 that will be covered in this
  21. document and not the general compatibility. OS/2 is a separate
  22. operating system and uses a separate shell to operate DOS
  23. applications. Many of the features in DR DOS can be operated in
  24. both operating systems, where some will only work while booted
  25. under DR DOS. Other features cannot be utilized because of
  26. conflicts with OS/2, and any use of these features should be done
  27. with extreme caution.

  29. Definitions:
  30. DOS Shell - the DOS shell provided with OS/2.  This DOS Shell is
  31. not DR DOS specific, although it will use the EXTERNAL commands in
  32. the DOS PATH.
  33.  
  34. Virtual Disk - This is the Virtual Disk Image feature of OS/2. 
  35.  
  36. DR DOS FEATURES
  37.  
  38. DELWATCH  Will not operate in a DOS shell under OS/2 or in Virtual 
  39.           Disk.
  40.  
  41. DELPURGE  Will not operate in a DOS shell under OS/2, but will    
  42.           function in Virtual Disk.
  43.  
  44. DISKMAP   Operates successfully in the DOS shell, but does not    
  45.           function in Virtual Disk.
  46.  
  47. DISKOPT   Will not run in the DOS shell.  When run in the DR DOS
  48.           environment DISKOPT will optimize the DR DOS files but
  49.           has no effect on OS/2 files.
  50.  
  51. PASSWORD  Shows incorrect version of operating system in an OS/2  
  52.           environment.  DR DOS files and directories currently    
  53.           having passwords are not secured.
  54.  
  55. SCRIPT    Shows an incorrect version of the operating system in the
  56.           DOS shell.
  57.  
  58. SECURITY  If Security is enabled, OS/2 WILL NOT boot under any    
  59.            circumstances. Security should not be used.
  60.  
  61. SuperSTOR Extended partitions of the hard disk can be compressed  
  62.           with SSTOR.EXE while booted under DR DOS 6.0.  These    
  63.           partitions cannot be read by OS/2 and the driver cannot 
  64.           be loaded in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file.  Applications on 
  65.           the compressed drive will not be accessible while       
  66.           operating in the DOS shell - they are accessible in the
  67.           Virtual Disk.
  68.  
  69. SuperPCK  SuperPCK can be used under either operating system but  
  70.           will not provide any benefit while booted under OS/2.   
  71.           OS/2 has its own cache, making SuperPCK unecessary.  This
  72.  
  73.           feature should not be used in the Virtual Disk.
  74.  
  75. TASKMAX   Will not operate in a DOS shell under OS/2.  OS/2 is a  
  76.           multi-tasking environment so TASKMAX is unecessary in the
  77.           Virtual Disk.  
  78.  
  79. VIEWMAX   OS/2 has a graphical interface so VIEWMAX is not        
  80.           necessary, but it will run in the DOS shell.  2(two)    
  81.           arrows will be displayed, one for OS/2 and one for      
  82.           VIEWMAX.  Wait until the viewmax arrow (there is a slight
  83.  
  84.           delay in movement between the two arrows) is placed over 
  85.           the desired action before clicking the mouse button.

  87. UNDELETE  Will not operate in a DOS shell under OS/2, but does    
  88.           function in Virtual Disk.

  91. INTERNAL COMMANDS
  92.  
  93. These commands are taken over by the OS/2 environment so they are
  94. no longer internal to DR DOS.  Refer to your OS/2 documentation for
  95. more information on the internal commands for OS/2.
  96.  
  97. VER       Shows OS/2 in the OS/2 DOS shell but will show DR DOS 6.0
  98.           in Virtual Disk.
  99.  
  100. EXTERNAL COMMANDS
  101.  
  102. The following DR DOS external commands work with certain
  103. exceptions:
  104.  
  105. FORMAT    With the exception of /S all switches function correctly.
  106.  
  107.           The /S switch will cause the system files to be copied, 
  108.           but the disk will not be bootable.
  109.  
  110. TREE      Works fine in either environment but provides statistics 
  111.           in a different format than the OS/2 version.
  112.  
  113. EDITOR    Works fine in DOS shell but has different features than 
  114.           EDLIN.
  115.  
  116. MEM       Works fine in DOS shell but provides statistics in a    
  117.           different format than the OS/2 Version.
  118.  
  119. SYS       Copies the system files for DR DOS but the disk is not  
  120.           bootable.  Does work in Virtual Disk, but takes the files
  121.  
  122.           from the disk image not the hard disk.

  125. The following external commands are included with OS/2 and should
  126. be used when in the OS/2 environment:

  128. *CHKDSK.COM, FORMAT.COM, MODE.COM, XCOPY.EXE, DISKCOPY.COM,
  129. DISKCOMP.COM, REPLACE.EXE, COMP.COM, MORE.COM, PRINT.COM, FIND.EXE,
  130. KEYB.COM, BACKUP.EXE, FDISK.COM, RECOVER.COM, LABEL.COM, TREE.COM,
  131. SORT.EXE, UNDELETE.COM, ATTRIB.EXE, RESTORE.EXE, EDLIN.COM, MEM.EXE
  132.  
  133. *Use of OS/2 CHKDSK /F on any drive formatted with DR DOS 6 or
  134. COMPAQ DOS 3.31 will result in corruption of the file allocation
  135. table.  Consult IBM for more details.
  136.  
  137. Other external commands either do not work in the OS/2 environment
  138. or they function normally, but have not been tested at this time. 
  139. Refer to the OS/2 documentation for features that can be utilized
  140. in OS/2 and avoid these conflicts.
